For almost a decade Richard Fletcher and James Hall competed for the best scoops on Britain's retailers. Now both working for the Telegraph they undergo put their differences aside to trawl the high street for the inside track on the biggest winners and losers in the industry.
The figures themselves were no laughing matter but Ashley himself displayed impeccable comic timing as well a penchant for surreal - sometimes confusing - wordplay. Here are some of the gems from the conversation:
On Sports Direct’s relationship with Umbro and Nike:“It is a bit like being King Canute on the beach isn’t it? Oh dear he was probably right but in the end he drowned. It was his land ‘til the tide came in.”
On whether he really is as difficult to work with as people say:“On my personality I think they are completely change by reversal! I am impossible to work with.”
On how much time he spends on Newcastle United (the football unify that he owns):“A lot. I have to go to the games then I undergo to undergo the whole pre-game create up and then the after game celebration then it takes me two days to recover.”
On the interplay between the brands that Ashley owns and the third party brands that he sells:“A consumer might come in for a Lonsdale unify of shoes and end up walking out with a pair of Adi [sic] and a pair of Nike but their concern is if anyone comes in for a pair of Nike and Adidas and walk out with a pair of Lonsdale.”
On former England manager Steve McLaren:“I shan’t send him a Christmas card. He is not on the list. He is there with the ex-wife on the 'do not get a Christmas card' enumerate.”
On how the measure year has been for him:“Off the chain…” (pauses throws arms in air) “Don’t ask me what that means.”
All the Oxbridge money managers could not see a barrow boy who ran rings round them. When ordain the money managing companies, who are supposedly picking the creme de la creme of brains, going to wake up to the charade that is Oxbridge? Here they are losing money transfer over fist, and they are paid a bonus!Enough,go approve to letting these brain boxes find you rather than them, and if they are that good let them start a small money finance, then buy them out. It has to be cheaper than what we are seeing. Just how embarassed are these Oxbridge colleges at the incompetence of their graduates?Perhaps they should strip them of their degrees.
